Soak Up the Sun: Bateman Agency Chooses the Songs of the Summer

From warm nights to beach vacations to copious amounts of bug spray, some things just scream “summer.” And of course, summer wouldn’t be the same without a soundtrack — the new and classic hits that get the good vibes going on a hot July afternoon.

Here at Bateman Agency, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to compile the ultimate playlist of summer hits. Listen along to Bateman’s songs of the summer here (including Batemanite bonus selections) — recommended for a day at the beach, an evening with a cool glass of wine, or even just your Monday morning commute.

Fred Bateman, CEO: “Vacation” by The GoGo’s

I’m a Gen Xer to the core — born in 1969, smack dab in the middle of that in-between demographic variously described as being both resourceful and independent or as slackers and whiners, depending on who you ask. True to my Gen X roots and identity as a gay man, my Songs of Summer selection is 100% ‘80s and 100% female vocalists. Side note: The GoGo’s with A Flock of Seagulls was my first concert at age 13 at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre.

Tara Klein, EVP: “Starships” by Nicki Minaj

The summer this song was popular, my brother was visiting for a week in Rhode Island and we would play this on the way to the beach with my kids. I can still remember the whole car singing it together… the clean version, of course.

Chris Walsh Sinka, VP & Head of Content: “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat

“Kiss Me More” was the song of the summer in 2021, it’s still the song of the summer in 2022, and if we’re being honest it’ll probably be the song of the summer for the next decade. I always define the song of the summer as the hit that gives off the best vibes when driving with the windows down in the middle of July, and Doja Cat’s vibes (and intergalactic space queen aesthetic) are impeccable.”

Caryn Brownell, Vice President: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears

Everything about it is pure ‘80s. I love the very beginning of the song. The guitar is extremely cool, as are the memories of the ‘80s I think of when I hear it!

Brooke Thivierge, Director of Operations: “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals

It’s catchy with summer vibes.

Tom Hannigan, Account Manager: “Soak Up the Sun” by Sheryl Crow

Soak up the sun.

Meghana Patnana, Associate - “Young, Wild & Free” by Snoop Dog and Wiz Khalifa

Some might consider it so cliche it’s cringy, but you can’t be upset while listening to Wiz Khalifa. The special thing about summer is that you get a sort of hall pass to any “anti” feelings you may have and get to release and move your body.

Eleftheria Horiatis, Associate: “Island in the Sun” by Weezer

I first heard this song when I was little and saw Aquamarine, and ever since then it has just been my quintessential summer song.

Claire Schulberg, Account Coordinator: “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” by ABBA

It’s impossible to feel sad when listening to ABBA. This song in particular reminds me of my trip last summer to the south of France!

Kaelyn Attridge, Account Coordinator: “More than a Woman” by The Bee Gees

I have so many memories as a kid dancing to this song along with other oldies outside in the summer, and it remains on my feel-good, warm weather playlist to this day.
